ETHICS AND SUSTAINABILITY
Things have changed around here and will continue to. Just like you, we are always looking at ways to be kinder to our environment by continually improving our products and day-to-day practices. We’re taking responsibility in being a part of an industry that has a huge impact on the planet. By taking accountability we’re creating change that matters across all touchpoints of the business and we’re so excited to not only offer beautiful designs to you, but pieces you can feel good about buying and wearing.
DISSH will be donating and redistributing any out-of-season stock to Thread Together, who will help us redistribute clothing to people in need and rescue the clothes from potential landfill. We’re dedicated to this positive change, and we’re excited to take you on this journey with us.
Some exciting things to come in 2021 include a 100% linen bridal collection, a recycled swimwear range, a complete overhaul of our packaging, and more sustainable systems and processes in place across the business.
FABRICS AND MATERIALS
The majority of our new collections are created from natural fibres. We have been designing and curating collections that hero 100% linen. Linen is a natural fibre with a lower environmental impact than other materials. It is strong and durable, meaning your DISSH linen piece is one you will wear time and time again. It not only looks great and feels luxurious, but linen is biodegradable. Another benefit of linen is it's breathability, making it cool in Summer and warm in Winter, meaning each linen garment is transeasonal and is a piece you'll love and live in all year around.
We have phased out all single use plastic packaging across our global online boutique. You will receive your order in a fully plant-based bag. These bags are reusable and are 100% biodegradable. They can be composted at home (AS5810) or within a commercial compost (AS4736). These bags have a 10 month shelf life when not composted.
On top of this significant packaging change, we are also changing what comes inside your package. We have removed all unnecessary branded packaging. We will no longer be printing our branded cards for inclusion in orders. Alongside this, all garments will come in a recycled plastic bag.
We will also have a 100% cotton DISSH tote bag as an option for every purchase instore and online.
DISSH is a proud partner of Suited To Success. Suited to Success is a not-for-profit community organisation that helps people overcome the barriers to employment. It has been an incredibly challenging time for the charity and the people they support. Our contributions help assist women in Australia become independent, by empowering them with the practical tools, support, and confidence they need for job seeking. As a business owned by and run by women, we are so passionate about supporting their work.
To date we have donated over $50,000 of stock that has supported their women’s fundraising events and their styling services. We also created and launched a 100% cotton tote bag with all profits donated to Suited To Success. To date we have donated $10,000 from these tote bags. The CEO of Suited to Success, Tamara Smith thanks you for your support and for "inspiring hope and self-belief for brighter futures."
We are also so excited and proud to have been a part of establishing a pioneering employment program, The Encoreship. The Encoreship provides employment and upskilling for women who are facing challenges re-entering the workforce after an extended period away from work – no matter the reason.
2020 was a difficult year for many. When it comes to workplace participation, emerging data suggests women have been disproportionately affected as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic with 61% of job losses in Australia experienced by women. Around half of the women who found themselves out of work, have dropped out of the workplace completely due to a myriad of reasons.
This program is a 3-month paid placement in DISSH, designed to upskill, build confidence, create connections and set women up for their future aspirations. We have filled our 2021 position and are excited to announce we will be bringing The Encoreship back in 2022. Stay tuned for more.
To avoid waste, stock is not ordered in mass quantities. We start with smaller orders to trial styles before ordering larger quantities across all stores, to suit our customer demand and avoid over-production and waste. We have partnered with Suited To Success to donate any excess stock and redistribute it to people who need it and to assist with their fundraising efforts.
Our pieces are designed by our Design and Creative Team here in Brisbane and manufactured in China with a high quality of production and factory standards.
PRINTING AND PAPER
We have significantly reduced printing in our Head Office, EBoutique and stores. We no longer print seasonal campaign imagery across any stores. We're also excited to announce that we have just launched our online returns portal. On top of being a more seamless experience for the customer, it also reduces print material from our orders. Gift cards are now all digital, removing this printing and plastic material completely from the business.
WHAT'S TO COME
- All packaging across the business changed to compostable or made from fully recycled materials.
- We will soon be introducing e-receipts meaning we will no longer print receipts for orders in store and online, allowing the customer to receive this digitally.
- We are excited to be working on a capsule range created from recycled materials. This will be launched in 2021.
