Second Chances: Thread Together's Impact

Dressing For The Future

Our team recently flew down to Sydney and had the pleasure of attending an intimate event hosted by Thread Together at their Central Clothing Hub.

Thread Together works to restore dignity and provide hope for women every day of the year. On this day, we had the pleasure of helping style 12 women from the Women's and Girl's Emergency Centre (WAGEC) - a specialist homelessness service for women and families escaping domestic violence. Our team had the opportunity to connect, learn and discover first-hand the confidence that a new outfit and connection can bring. One of the inspiring women to attend the day was Mahek - a second generation doctor, born in Afghanistan. After the birth of her son, Mahek and her husband moved to Australia in search of opportunity.

However, once arriving in Australia, things in her relationship took a turn and Mahek made the difficult but necessary decision to get her son out of their home and into safety.

Without family nearby, Mahek found support through WAGEC and began to find her voice again.Coinciding with International Women's Day 2023, Mahek joined us at Thread Together's Sydney Clothing Hub. Together with a stylist, Mahek chose new clothing that matched her style for a new life. She explains the experience offered hope and relief.

As she prepares to retake her medical exam in Australia, the Clothing Hub helped Mahek source outfits for her face-to-face interview. She found pieces to help her feel empowered to enter the workforce and establish financial independence for herself and her son.
